Birds are faced with constant threats. As a result, the populations of
many species are decreasing - some at an alarming rate!
YOU can do some simple things to help our birds!
Simple Bird Conservation Actions for Students and Families
1. maintain clean bird feeders and bird baths - Yes, birds need food and water so feeders and
bird baths are helpful. You must also keep them clean so the birds stay healthy.
2. put up nest boxes - This will provide safe places for birds to next and raise their young.

3. keep cats indoors - Cats are skilled hunters. Birds make ideal prey. Keeping cats indoors
can save many birds. Besides, it's probably safer for your cat anyway!

4. make windows "bird friendly" - Millions of birds are killed each year by flying into windows.
You can make windows bird proof by using special stickers sold at most bird feeder stores.

5. bird friendly coffee and chocolate - Coffee and cacao plantations often replace important
non-breeding habitats in Centra; and South America. Purchasing shade grown coffee helps
protect our neo-tropical songbirds. Bird-friendly chocolate is hard to find but worth the effort!

6. plant native species - People landscape their yards with beautiful plants. Unfortunately,
many of the more popular plants do not naturally grow in those areas and provide little if any
nutritional value for the local birds. By planting native species, the local birds can find the
natural food their ancestors have depended upon for generations.

7.  teach other people about birds! - Most people have no idea how many cool species of
birds live in their own neighborhood. Even fewer people realize how our daily activities
threaten the lives of these birds. Share that information with people. YOU can make a
difference!

8. volunteer your time - Every state has bird conservation projects. Perhaps you could help
put out fences for beach nesters, monitor next boxes, or clean a local park!
